The Sound in the Barnyard
Rowan sat on his bed. He looked out the window. "What is that sound?" he asked.
A loud growl came from the barnyard. Rowan ran out of the house. He found a brown puppy.
It was stuck in a cobweb. "Ouch," Rowan said as he pulled the puppy free. The puppy wagged its tail and licked Rowan's face.
Rowan smiled. "Let's go to the farmhouse," he said. They walked past the silo and the old barn.
The puppy wagged its tail the whole way. At the farmhouse, Rowan's mom was baking. "Mom, look what I found!" Rowan shouted.
His mom turned around. "Oh, what a cute puppy!" she said.
Rowan's mom gave the puppy a bath. "You are now clean," she said. The puppy barked and shook its fur.
Water droplets flew everywhere. Rowan laughed. "I think we should keep him," Rowan said.
His mom nodded. "Yes, we can keep him," she said. Rowan hugged the puppy. "I will name you Scout," he said.
Rowan and Scout ran outside. The sun was bright, and the air was warm. They played all day. Rowan was happy to have a new friend.
