A Woodpecker's Day
In the lush woods, Brooke the bright woodpecker, made her home. She pecked a snug hole in a tall, old oak tree.
The bark of the tree was thick but inside, her home was just right.
Brooke loved to tap and tap on the wood of the tree with her strong bill. She made soft dull thuds.
One sunny day, Brooke stood on the branch and looked out. She saw bugs and grub in the bark and flew closer to them.
Tap, tap, tap! Her bill hit the wood with a loud thud. The tree shook with each tap and bugs hid deep in the cracks.
Brooke liked the challenge. After every tap, she was quick and picked at the bark to swiftly grab the bugs. She had lots of fun.
Brooke kept on tapping. She found one more big, fat bug. It was snug in its hole.
Brooke pecked and pecked but could not pull the bug out. She did not stop. With every tap, the bug pushed itself further in the hole but Brooke did not give up.
Brooke's beak hit the wood, and the hole got larger each time. Finally, with lots of tugs, pulls, and taps, she got the big bug.
'Yum!' said Brooke, glad to fill her tummy. After lunch, Brooke sang a nice, long, happy song.
Her chirps rang through the woods. Other birds sang back and soon, the woods were full of music. Brooke felt good.
The sun sat and the sky grew dim. Brooke flew back to her nook in the oak tree. It was time for her to rest. It had been a long day.
Brooke got cozy and fluffed her soft, black and white feathers, while listening to the songs of the birds.
Brooke closed her eyes to the music and soon was fast asleep.
She dreamt of finding more bugs in her forest home. All was well in the woods.
